Being a spiritual watchman is the role for every believer. None of us are excused or exempt from this responsibility. When we join the army of the kingdom of God, we’re issued with weapons and with binoculars. The sad reality, though, is that too many believers are asleep at their posts. No armor or weapons, no matter how polished or sharp, will save us if the enemy sneaks up from behind. Even worse, we could unwittingly help to drag in the ‘Trojan horse.’ Warfare is dirty business, and the soldier who is not also a watchman is neglecting a vital part of his duty.
Habakkuk 2:1-3 states, "I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint Then the Lord said to me,“Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others. This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.
Being a spiritual watchman is a never-ending responsibility, a role we never step out of and one we never take a break from. If we’re breathing, we’re meant to be watching. Simple. We can’t put the responsibility on anyone else. Our ‘watch field’ is where we are – at home, at work, on the bus, at school, at the PTA meeting…That’s because the enemy isn’t particular about where he strikes. Any battlefield will do. But the one without a watchman is going to be the one he chooses. Why not? It gives him the element of surprise, after all.
Today’s verse reminds us to be ready. To watch and pray in love as spiritual watchmen, because we never know the time He will call us to manifest His will. As this series comes to a close I just want to share that we are called with a specific task for our call and our purpose helps us to fulfill God’s assignment in many different ways. We just have to submit to his call!
